Staff are also involved in the master planning for the African Penguin Breeding programme.
At present we have tremendous breeding success with the Inca terns and African penguins on our site. We have excellent husbandry techniques which are shared with other collections Europe wide and the young birds are moved to other zoos within the network to maintain a stable and genetically diverse population.
In addition, staff at our sister zoos, Paignton Zoo and Newquay, co-ordinate the programmes of another twelve species.
At Paignton Zoo these are:
- Sulawesi crested black macaque
- white-faced saki monkey
- wrinkled hornbill
- red-tailed amazon
- Cuban crocodile
- great argus pheasant
- Baer’s pochard
