Web Accessibility
In the development of this website, we have aimed to make the content accessible to people who have visual, hearing, motor or cognitive impairments.
Specific work we have undertaken in the site design and build is as follows:
Navigation
To assist visually impaired users who use screen reader software to browse the website, the site navigation has been designed so that it is possible to move from link to link using the tab key. Users of screen reader software can also use the ‘skip to content’ link in the top left of the site to ignore menu items and jump straight to the content of that page.
Text contrast
The text and background colour combination in this website’s design has been chosen to make text clear to users.
Resizing the text
Users can increase the text size on this website through the following menu options on your web browser:
- Internet Explorer: View > Text Size
- Netscape: View > Text Zoom
- Mozilla / Firefox: View > Text Size
- Safari: View > Make Text Bigger
Descriptive hyperlink text
Hyperlinks (or links) throughout the website have been given clear text descriptions to assist screen reader software.
Images and alternative text
Text equivalents for all non-text elements such as images are provided as Alternative Text, which is used to describe the content to screen reader software.
Flash
This website does not use Flash animation for navigation purposes.
Where Flash elements are used in the site, there is a text and / or static image alternative for people using technologies that do not support this technology.
Cascading Style Sheets
The website has been built using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control colour, font and page layout. Multiple style sheets are used to support as many of the major web browsers as possible.
This approach allows users to apply ‘author style sheets’ or to view the site with the styling disabled.
