Torquay charity on global mission to raise funds for endangered species
Due to be launched at the end of September, Mission: Penguin is one of the first apps to allow users across the world to give something back, raising money for essential wildlife projects with every purchase, both locally and globally.
As well as visiting the famous free-roaming penguins of Living Coasts, visitors can now play as one of the zoo’s favourite animals too! Mission: Penguin lets users play as Flash, a heroic penguin in search of food for his colony in Antarctica. After finding a plentiful fish supply, Flash also discovers the dastardly Ori the Orca who has his heart set on a Flash sandwich.
Players must work through five different habitats, collecting as much fish as possible in order to feed the colony and escape Ori’s clutches, avoiding a plethora of obstacles and hazards along the way.
Situated at the heart of The English Riviera, on Torquay’s harbourside, Living Coasts is part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT) and one of the few truly coastal zoos in the world. The hard-working marine conservation charity allows visitors to take a journey around the coasts of the world and get up close and personal with mammals, fish and birds in their naturalistic habitats.
The launch of the iPhone app is the latest in a string of worthwhile fundraising schemes the zoo has adopted in order to carry on its vital work helping to protect some of the most loved and endangered marine species.
Speaking of the launch, Elaine Hayes from Living Coasts commented: “We are really excited about the launch of Mission: Penguin. Living Coasts is famous for its free roaming penguins; so to use penguins in our launch title was the perfect choice. We have worked closely with the creator to produce a game which is not just a blatant appeal for funds, but is packed with entertainment value too.
“We hope that word will spread for the game’s quality and content as well as for the charity angle which is vitally important to enable us to achieve our goals in conservation.”
Stuart Wright from Living Coasts commented on his inspiration for creating the characters in the app: “Flash is a particular favourite of mine, he’s a hybrid of people from my own life as well as some of my favourite fictional characters. I have really enjoyed bringing these wonderful characters to life although the animations proved to be a bit of a headache at times.”
