Seal or No Seal at Living Coasts

2 June 2010

One of the nation’s favourite game shows has been reinvented – with a twist.

Seal Or No Seal has been devised to help celebrate the birthdays of Living Coasts’ South American fur seals, which all fall at this time of year.

The coastal zoo’s half term activities are all about seals. At 4:00pm every day there will be the Seal Gameshow Roadshow which features a quiz and games including Seal Or No Seal.

Living Coasts events coordinator Kate Hall said: “The game is hosted by presenter Shoal Edmonds, complete with garish shirt and false beard. The famous red boxes from Deal Or No Deal are yellow here, but the idea is the same - visitors will be picked at random and invited to come and open a box. Inside will be a picture of an animal at Living Coasts - they will win a prize depending on which animal they get.

“If they find an animal from Living Coasts that is not a seal, contestants get a small prize. If they get an ordinary seal they win a better prize – and if they pick the golden seal they get to help feed the seals at the 4:30pm feed.”

Living Coasts is home to five South American fur seals. Gringo was born on 20th May 1996 and is 14 years old; Grace (26th May) is almost 9, Tunanta: (07th June) will soon be 4, Luna (11th June) is nearly 9 and Oscar (14th June) will be 3.

From 12:00 to 1:00pm daily after the seal feed at noon, staff will invite visitors to help make birthday presents for the seals in the form of environmental enrichment items. Seal craft activities will be running, as well as Meet the Scientist daily at 1:30pm to investigate seaweed, one of the seal’s favourite enrichment items.
