Hatching!

26 May 2009

Exciting news from Penguin Beach.

During the course of last night the first macaroni chick of 2009 emerged from it's egg just in time for half-term. The chick belongs to our most successful breeding macaroni pair, Corinne and Blue, who have in the past reared 4 chicks here at Living Coasts Waddle, Babe, Rocky and Daisy.

Both mother and father appear to be very proud of their little chick and are taking it in turns to keep it warm and fed. The parents will continue to brood the chick for approximately 24 days and after about 11 weeks this chick will develop it's waterproof layer of feathers by then hopefully it will be joined by some other chicks.

We were lucky enough to see

We were lucky enough to see the baby macoroni penguin last week on our holiday in Torquay. He was lying under mom and woke up squeaking to be fed. Dad did this and we could have watched them for hours. The lady who was on duty that day (Friday) said that the visitors and photographer the previous week had been waiting ages to get a view of him but without any luck. So we were really fortunate. We then went on to see the fur seals being fed. They were beautiful. The birds were also well worth the visit and it was lovely to see them flying freely without being restricted to cages. We were really impressed with how clean and well kept the zoo was
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Living Coasts and will certainly return when we next visit Torquay.

Well done and best wishes to all the residents and staff.
Please keep us posted about the baby macoronis.
