Living Coasts - Cleaner Coasts

Staff and volunteers from Living Coasts and 170 students from Davy House at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School cleaned Livermead Beach, Institute Cove adjoining Livermead Cliff Hotel and Beacon Cove near Living Coasts on Friday 26th September.
The team also carried out a survey of the rubbish found on behalf of the Marine Conservation Society.
The school joined forces with Torquay’s coastal zoo last September to help clean St Mary’s Bay beach, Brixham, when they collected 80kg of rubbish. The clean-up started at 10:00am, with low tide at 10:30am. The students visited Living Coasts afterwards. This year we collected 93 kg of litter.
Torbay Beach Officer Lindsey Herbert has organised the collection of the rubbish after the clean. Cabinet Member for Tourism Cllr Beryl McPhail said: “Whilst the major tourist beaches in Torbay are manned and cleaned daily from May until the beginning of October, there are many smaller, rural beaches that cannot be cleaned as often. We are very grateful for the assistance given by groups such as this one. It’s particularly nice to highlight the fact that many youngsters are willing to take the time and effort to improve their surroundings.”
David Hove Deputy Head of Daveys House also presented a cheque to Clare Davies of Living Coasts, he said,” in recognition of the wonderful work done by Living Coasts to aid the continuation of such projects I’d like to present a cheque for £500.’
