Key Stage 3

The following packages are suitable for key stage 3 students

HABITATS KS3
Our habitat program explores a range of marine habitats, from mangroves to estuaries, and the organisms that can be found living in them. It is designed to encourage understanding of a range of habitats and examine adaptations that are utilised by some of the animals that we have at Living Coasts. The topics of feeding relationships, food webs and classification can be introduced during this session.

Can include; design an animal.

NC targets addressed:

  • Sc2 (Life processes and living things)
  • Living things in their environment – a, b, c, d, e, f

Workshops:

  • Tour – take a guided tour around Living Coasts and look at the range of habitats we have. Compare and contrast different habitats and discuss the types of adaptations animals may have to their environment.
    • Habitat design – discuss different types of habitats and adaptations. Design a habitat and create an animal to live there, complete with adaptations to its environment.

    BIODIVERSITY KS3
The biodiversity program uses Living Coasts to explore and discover a wide range of organisms. It can involve a broad look at biodiversity including; an introduction to variation and classification, food webs and chains and feeding relationships. We can also deliver a more focused session on a particular group of animals.

Can include; Squid dissection, classification activity

    NC targets addressed:

    • Sc2 (Life processes and living things)
    Variation, classification and inheritance – a, b
    Living things in their environment – a, b, c, d, e, f
    • En1 (Speaking and listening)
    Speaking
    Listening
    Group discussion and interaction

    Workshops:

    • Biodiversity – take a broad look at biodiversity including food webs and feeding relationships, human impacts on biodiversity and how we can help to preserve it.
    • Camouflage – learn about how some of the animals at Living Coasts camouflage, attract mates and even communicate visually.
    • Classification – learn about classifying animals into groups and why this is useful for scientists. Examine characteristics that identify different phyla and classify the animals at Living Coasts.

    CONSERVATION KS3
The conservation program is designed to encourage understanding of the meaning of conservation and why it is important. The workshop can be a broad look at conservation, particularly focusing on some of the animals we have at Living Coasts. Alternatively, it can be a focused session on over-fishing, marine litter or endangered species.

Can include; beach clean and litter survey; over-fishing game.

    NC targets addressed:

    • Sc2 (Life processes and living things)
    • Variation, classification and inheritance – a, b
    • Living things in their environment – a, b, c, d, e, f
    • En1 (Speaking and listening)
    • Speaking
    • Listening
    • Group discussion and interaction

    Workshops:

    • Endangered species – learn about species that are endangered in the wild and look at some of the threatened species that we have at Living Coasts. Examine how food webs can be affected by species decline.
    • Marine litter – find out how litter can affect animals in the sea and help out by doing a beach clean and a litter survey on our local beach.
    • Over fishing – learn about how fish stocks are being over fished and what can be done to support sustainable fisheries.

    ENRICHMENT KS3
The enrichment program allows pupils to interact with the animals at Living Coasts. As part of the workshop the pupils will create some enrichment toys for the penguins or seals to play with and later on in the day will be able to watch it being used. It also allows pupils an insight into the kind of work keepers may carry out during a typical day.

    Includes; enrichment making.

    Workshop:

    • Design and create an enrichment toy for either the penguins or the seals and watch them play with it during the visit.

    MATHS KS3
Our maths program is designed to demonstrate the use of practical maths skills outside of the classroom, and to show how maths can be used in fun and exciting ways. During the workshops the use of maths is combined with learning about the biology of the animals at Living Coasts and shows how maths can be used with science. The workshop can be focused on; animal behaviour study and data collection or designing a new animal enclosure.

    NC targets addressed:
    • Ma2 (Number and algebra)

    • Using and applying number and algebra – a, e,
    • Numbers and the number system – c, d, e

    • Sc2 (Life processes and living things)

    • Living things in their environment – a, b, c

    Workshops:

    • Penguin behaviour - observe the behaviour of the penguins on penguin beach and analyse the data that the class has collected.
    • Enclosure design – have a go at designing a new enclosure for some of our animals at Living Coasts. Think about the space needed, materials used and budget for the project.
