Key Stage 2

Our key stage 2 packages....

HABITATS KS2
Our habitat program explores a range of marine habitats, from mangroves to estuaries, and the animals that can be found living in them. It is designed to encourage understanding of a range of habitats and how different organisms are adapted to live in their environment. The topics of feeding relationships, food chains and food webs can be introduced during this session.

Can include; Design an animal

NC targets addressed:
• Sc2 (Life processes and living things)

  • Life processes – a, c
  • Living things in their environment – a, b, c, d, e

Workshops:
• Tour – take a guided tour around Living Coasts and look at the range of habitats we have. Compare and contrast different habitats and discuss the types of adaptations animals may have to their environment.
• Habitat design – discuss different types of habitats and adaptations. Design a habitat and create an animal to live there, complete with adaptations to its environment.

BIODIVERSITY KS2
The biodiversity program uses Living Coasts to explore and discover a wide range of organisms. It can involve a broad look at biodiversity including; an introduction to variation and classification, food webs and chains and feeding relationships. We can also deliver a more focused session on a particular group of animals.

Can include; Squid dissection, camouflage game, classification game.

NC targets addressed:
• Sc2 (Life processes and living things)

  • Life processes – a, b, c
  • Humans and other animals – e
  • Variation and classification – a, b, c
  • Living things in their environment – a, b, c, d, e, f

• En1 (Speaking and listening)

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Group discussion

Workshops:
• Biodiversity – take a broad look at biodiversity including food webs and feeding relationships, human impacts on biodiversity and how we can help to preserve it.
• Camouflage – learn about how some of the animals at Living Coasts camouflage, attract mates and even communicate visually. Play the predator and prey game.
• Classification – learn about sorting animals into groups and why this is useful for scientists. Have a go at classifying the animals at Living Coasts.
• Molluscs – find out what makes a mollusc and how they survive in the ocean. Have a closer look by dissecting a squid.
• Plankton – learn about the oceans smallest animals and how important they are to food webs and feeding relationships. Have a look at what animals plankton can grow into.

CONSERVATION KS2
The conservation program is designed to encourage understanding of the meaning of conservation and why it is important. The workshop can be a broad look at conservation, particularly focusing on some of the animals we have at Living Coasts. Alternatively, it can be a focused session on over-fishing, marine litter or endangered species.

Can include; beach clean and litter survey; over-fishing game.

NC targets addressed:
• Sc2 Life processes and living things

  • Variation and classification – b, c
  • Living things in their environment – a, b, c, d, e

• En1 Speaking and listening

Workshop:
• Endangered species – learn about species that are endangered in the wild and look at some of the threatened species that we have at Living Coasts. Have a look at food webs and feeding relationships and how these can be affected by decline in species.
• Marine litter – find out how litter can affect animals in the sea and help out by doing a beach clean and a litter survey on our local beach.
• Over fishing – learn about how fish stocks are being over fished and what can be done to support sustainable fisheries.

ENRICHMENT KS2
The enrichment program allows pupils to interact with the animals at Living Coasts. As part of the workshop the pupils will create some enrichment toys for the penguins or seals to play with and later on in the day will be able to watch it being used.

Includes; enrichment making.

NC targets addressed:
• SC2 (Life processes and Living things)

  • Life processes – a
  • Living things in their environment – a, b, c

• SC3 (Materials and their properties)

  • Grouping and classifying materials – a

Workshop:
• Design and create an enrichment toy for either the penguins or the seals and watch them play with it during the visit.

GEOGRAPHY KS2
Our geography program explores marine based topics that can be linked with geography. The workshop can be focused on tides, including tidal movements and the strandline. Alternatively, we can deliver a session about turtle migration which involves learning to use compass skills and navigation.

Can include: compass navigation activity, tides game.

NC targets addressed:
• Geography:

  • Geographical enquiry and skills
  • 2 – a, b, c
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental change and sustainable development
  • 5 – a, b

• Sc2 Life processes and living things

Workshops:
• Tides – take a look at what can be found on the strandline at high tide including local species as well as litter. Learn about the daily movement of the tides and how this is controlled by the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon.
• Sea turtles and navigation – learn about the migration of sea turtles and how they have an inbuilt compass to do so. Practise compass skills by following a compass trail around site.

MATHS KS2
Our maths program is designed to demonstrate the use of practical maths skills outside of the classroom, and to show how maths can be used in fun and exciting ways. During the workshops the use of maths is combined with learning about the animals at Living Coasts and shows how maths can be used in science. The workshop can be focused on; estimation of animal size, animal behaviour study and data collection or designing a new animal enclosure.

NC targets addressed:

• Ma2 (Number)
o Using and applying number – a, e, k
o Numbers and the number system –
• Ma3 (Shape, space and measures)
o Using and applying shape, space and measures – a,
o Understanding measures – a, b
• Sc2 (Life processes and living things)
o Living things in their environment – b, c

Workshops:
• Fish size estimation – exercise estimation skills by estimating the size of different species of shark and learn about shark biology.
• Penguin behaviour – observe the behaviour of the penguins on penguin beach and analyse the data that the class has collected.

ENGLISH KS2
The English program uses Living Coasts to inspire creative writing. It also encourages the understanding of work carried out in zoos and introduces conservation messages. The hour long workshop can be based on a tour around site encouraging pupils to think of creative language to describe the animals and their habitats and then allowing time to start a piece of creative writing. Alternatively pupils can create and perform their own puppet show aiming to deliver a conservation message.

NC targets addressed:

• En1 (Speaking and listening)
o Speaking
o Listening
o Group discussion and interaction
o Drama
• En3 (Writing)
o Composition
o Planning and drafting

Workshops:
• Puppets – use animal puppets to create a puppet show with a conservation message based on your visit to Living Coasts.
• Creative writing – take a tour around site and learn about the animals at Living Coasts as well as coming up with some creative ways to describe them and their surroundings.
