Flying without wings

I call the class to attention, your penguin lesson is about to begin. Following on from our polar bear discussion, today's blog will focus on flying, or lack of it.

Why can't penguins fly? Because we don't have enough money to buy a plane ticket. I'm joking, but it is true, we can't fly. Not a bit. Most of us don't bother flapping our wings unless we are cold, there's no point in trying to fly because our wings can't lift us. Our bodies are too heavy because our bones, unlike other birds are dense, not hollow. This allows us to dive very well, so flying is only achieved under water! As we feed on fish squid and krill there is no need for us to fly anyway.

I thought that most people knew this, but I think I was wrong. I blame the BBC because of their April Fool's Day sketch that showed Adelie penguins flying to the Amazon rainforest. Clearly some people believed it.

ping why haven't you added

ping why haven't you added any youtube films to your blog recently, I miss them

You have such beauty and

You have such beauty and grace under water. I'd love to swim with you (I know the dolphins get the good press with that one, but it's 'swimming with penguins' that does it for me) but I can't scuba dive, so it's no go :o(
